Kampus Induk, 27 March 2024- the Chemical Engineering Student Society at Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang, recently hosted a captivating career talk titled Dare to Discover – Engineering as a Path to Patent Law. The event, held at Dewan Auditorium USMKKJ by featured esteemed Patent Lawyer SLB, who shared invaluable insights into the intersection of these disciplines.

SLB, known for its expertise in patent law and extensive experience in the legal field, captivated the targeted audience who were the engineering undergraduates and postgraduate students with the speakers’ speech on patent law and their experiences entering this field. 

During the talk, SLB speakers explained what is patent law, what is their jobscope, how is the working environment at company and emphasized the importance of  these opportunities and highlighted the significant role engineers can play in the legal landscape, particularly in patent law.

“SLB reached out to us last year, proposing this event to be held in USM. As a chemical engineering student, we are excited to receive this offer as it is a global technology company that drives energy innovation for a balanced planet, which very much aligns with our future career path,” said Ms Lim Wei Yuan, the project director.

Many aspiring engineers were made aware of the variety of career options available outside of traditional engineering roles by this event, which opened their eyes. Students were able to interact with SLB during the interactive session, asking questions and getting guidance on how to figure out an effective career path in this industry.

“We faced multiple postponements due to incompatible schedule and water supply disruption in Penang therefore. The event initially scheduled in 2nd week of November has been postponed until this semester. Other than that, the team from SLB and ChESS were great and we worked along well. It was a great experience for both sides,” said Ms Lee Jia Ying, the vice project director.
